I heard today of the sad passing of a favourite comic artist Massimo Belardinelli. Many other people can tell the history of this great artist better than I so I will leave it to the links below for you to discover all about him. His death had been supposedly forced onto him several years ago when it was reported that the hard to track down artist was dead but fans rejoiced upon hearing he was alive although in poor health. Sadly it seems its true this time as the news slowly filters in.
My first real taste of Massimo's work was on the legendary 'Ace Trucking Co', where the skipper of the 'Speedo Ghost' Ace Garp and the crew GBH and Feek the Freek where mind blowing to behold and their adventures hilariously written by John Wagner and Alan Grant. I loved the art of Ace Trucking as it bore no resemblance to anything else in 2000AD and it looked like it would take years to actually produce. A popular series for 2000AD today is 'Slaine' and the early adventures where drawn and brought to life by Massimo. Although years later Massimo's style would be frowned upon by many new 2000AD reader if it wasn't for his work and development on 'Slaine' they wouldn't be enjoying the series in the pages of the comic today.
My favoutite series though has to be 'The Dead', written by Peter Milligan. I couldn't believe what I was seeing when I first saw this series. The panel I have posted was so wonderful I had to try and draw it myself, one of many I attempted and failed miserably at. The character of the series Fludd was killed in order to save the world he came from where everyone was immortal but where being infected by demons (as usually happens). Fludd had survived an attack by a demon and was sent to the 'Deadworld' to find out how to stop the demons at the source. It was excellent and I loved it. The April edition of 2000AD's 'Extreme' magazine actually features the entire series of 'The Dead' so if your very lucky you can go to WHSmiths and still find it, I would if I was you. I'm lucky enough to own a few pages from the series and I'll be looking them out and admiring the work that Massimo put into them.
Safe journey Massimo, thanks for all the great art!
