The First Doctor - Ink Sketch

I don't tend to do much loose work in my illustration. Most of it is pencilled quite tightly so I know where I'm going with a piece and that usually helps keep the client happy too as they don't get too many big surprises heaped on them after approving the pencil work. I do like to experiment however and that usually happens when I'm colouring an illustration on a computer, painting traditionally or sketching.

I've become very fond of a Pentel Brush Pen I use for doing very quick inked sketches, see this post for an example of this. I take a much more measured approach to my inking for finished pieces but for a loose inked sketch I love using this pen. Its very fluid and gives some lovely surprises when you are relaxed and playing around with it.

I've started doing some quick inked sketches that will be given away with my comic 'One Last Time' at Thought Bubble comic convention in Leeds. I've blocked in the rough information with a blue lead pencil and then have just gone straight to inking the sketch with the brush pen. I think this first one took a couple of minutes pencilling and then about ten minutes to ink so you can see its very quick and loose from my usual approach but I thought that a free sketch with my comic would help the sales, maybe?

I'll typically stick to a subject I like and also mostly just portrait (head and shoulders) shots of a character. To start I'll be doing Doctor Who sketches and to make it easy for me I'll begin with just the Doctor, well he has regenerated a few times!

Thought Bubble - more!

Three more illustrations finished for the comic convention Thought Bubble this November. Its a shame I painted Dredd first in this batch of three as looking at the other two it would have been good to continue the 'hands in your pockets' theme. Would be funny to see Joe Dredd with his massive gloves shoved in his pockets.

Work in progress!

So its baby number three (sorry no new illustration this time) and most definitely a work in progress as he/she is only twelve weeks old. We've known for a while that we wanted more kids but most people have been surprised by the news, once you get two under your belts in the UK that seems to be the standard. It's all quite exciting again and nothing beats watching the little 'un on a monitor thrashing about. So far everything is fine and everyone is happy with baby's progress. Roll on the next scan!

Win some of my original Doctor Who artwork!

illustration,Inks,Doctor Who,Graeme Neil Reid

Over on Scotch Corner (Scottish artist collective blog) it's my turn to offer a prize for the monthly competition so I've delved into the art chest and found this original ink illustration of seventh Doctor Sylvester McCoy and companion Ace played by Sophie Aldred. I drew this back in 2002 and its been in my Doctor Who Gallery for a while now. The finished piece is a parody film poster based on one of the many renditions of the original Star Wars poster and is for the 1988 story by Ben Aaronovitch 'Remembrance of the Daleks'.

Not only do you get a chance to win the original ink artwork for the piece but you also get an A3 print of the finished poster and a copy of "Remembarnce of the Daleks' on DVD. Three prizes! It's also really easy to enter, all you need to do is follow this link and leave a comment about the illustration, that's it, simples!
