WIN Dr Whoops!

I've spent part of the last week tidying and cleaning up the upper level of my house. The 'spare' room upstairs needed clearing out of all the clutter and boxes that got stored there as its being turned into my daughters bedroom and as most of the clutter was over spill from my studio it meant I had to sort out my studio. I've worked with rather large piles of 'stuff' surrounding my art board and computer for about five years, so tidying up has meant I've unearthed many a lost item.

One of the lost items was this ink sketch which I had assumed I had sold at the comic convention Thought Bubble in Leeds last year but it turned out I had slowly been rolling the wheels of my chair over it each time I sat down at the board. So Tom has become the Timelord Dr Whoops :) He's not completely ruined but I certainly cannot expect to sell it to someone... so who wants Tom?

For the next week I'll run a mini competition to win this crumpled sketch. To enter you need be a 'follower' of the blog (just hit that follow button) and leave a comment to this post stating your favourite Tom Baker moment. All entries by midnight on the 5th September. I'll get the wife to randomly pick the winner. Please make sure you have a contact email either in your comment or your profile.

EDIT: If you are a new follower to the blog and enter this competition make sure that if your profile name isn't the same as your real name that you let me know in the message who you are. I've had entries that don't match with new followers so its all a bit confusing :)

Chinook

I see a lot of these flying about, I keep a pair of binoculars in my studio as I get a fair amount of passing air traffic. Chinooks are great, they look great and they sound proper war film great, wokka wokka wokka wokka wokka wokka wokka wokka etc. (substitute your own helicopter noise as you see fit). I know no technical details about the craft but Wikipedia have all those kind of facts should you wish to know them.

The interesting thing for me on this piece was that for a change I coloured it before I inked it. I lightly penciled out the shape of the helicopter and then set to work with my colour Promarker pens. Once I was happy with it in colour I added in the ink work. Back to front but a fun experiment.

Judge Dredd Megazine #301

Well my first ever work on Judge Dredd is in the shops today, please go to your newsagent or magazine provider of choice and purchase a copy. Not only do you get to see my work inked by fellow Scotch Corner member Gary Erskine but you also get Simon Frasers story 'Lily MacKenzie and the Mines of Charybdis'. So that's three Scotch Corner contributors all in the same place at once! Just look out for the stunning cover by fellow Scotsman Frank Quitely!

Carrying a big box of polystyrene cups I cowered into the Mighty Tharg's office and asked if I could show the pencils to the first page, seeing through my attempted sweetener he sent me on my way with a Rigellian Hotshot but graciously agreed to my request.

A study in ink...

Posted this over on Scotch Corner yesterday but thought I'd put it up here too (helps make the place look less sparse).

Here's a sketch commission I finished last week for Jess Power and her fan site Benedict Cumberbatch Online. Benedict has been wowing TV viewers here in the UK with his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in the three feature length episodes that has run on BBC1 on Sunday nights. (UK residents can still see it on the BBC iPlayer for the rest of this week). Its been a great mini series and I'm hoping that more will be commissioned soon, if the reviews have anything to say on the matter it will already have been done.

Jess tells me that she is running a competition on the site to win this sketch so for those with a love of Sherlock Holmes, Benedict Cumberbatch or indeed my sketches head here and enter. The competition runs until mid-September.
