Cowboy Doctor Ink Sketch

So Series 6 of Doctor Who starring Matt Smith finished back on the 2nd and having not sketched the Doctor for ages I thought I'd do a mini week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday) of Doctor Who sketches. If there is one thing you can say about this series its that it has stirred up a lot of discussion. Some people can't stand it, some people blindly love everything about it and others can't get their heads around it. The series was split in two with the first half running from Easter with the intention to adjust the regular Who slot to the later part of the year as will be the case with the next series running late in the year in 2012. A major complaint levelled at the show has been that its too complicated but I think most people have really suffered with the inability to wait for all the pieces of the puzzle to be placed at their feet and can't stand waiting and not being able to figure it out as they go along. Why would you want to know it all straight away anyway?

For myself I've enjoyed this series, I have niggles about some elements but not the extent of allowing it to ruin the show for me. Some comments I've read state that it's not the same Doctor Who they grew up with but if I remember rightly people complained about the series then just as much as they do now. Nothing is perfect and people find complaint in just about everything and anything so your best bet is to figure out for yourself if you like something and not worry about them. I'm guessing that the viewing figures and the booming merchandising market will help keep the Doctor on our screens for a while yet. Talking of merchandise I've drawn the Doctor with his latest hat which no doubt gives them plenty of reasons to release more toys with cowboy hats included, maybe they had a surplus of cowboy hats and asked Steven Moffat to kindly write them into the series?

The last episode of the series, The Wedding of River Song, had so many visually great scenes that I'm only going to sketch from that episode. The crypt scene with the head of Dorium Maldovar was well done and I loved the very snappy skulls. A nice nod to the passing of Nicholas Courtney who played the Brig and a welcome return of Ian McNeice as Churchill. I could keep pointing out cool things from this episode but I'll finish on my biggest negative, a fine example of bad fake beard on the Doctor, who says its not the same as the old series?
